This Interim Report reports on a series of public consultations with residents in the community of Churchill
as a part of the Sustainable Churchill initiative, which is a partnership between the Town of Churchill and
the University of Winnipeg, and administered by the Institute of Urban Studies. Between the summer
of 2008 and summer 2009, the partnership involved researchers from the University of Winnipeg and
students reviewing existing plans and scienti# c studies, visiting the community on several occasions,
meeting with residents and conducting informal interviews. The # rst of these engagements took place in
March of 2009; an online survey was mounted between March and June 2009; and interviews and public
meetings were hosted in late August and the # rst week of September, 2009.
The Interim Report sets out in detail the methods used for each of these engagements before reporting
on the inputs received. The # ndings from each event and instrument will be summarized. Finally it draws
conclusions on key # ndings that will inform sustainability planning for Churchill, and which will be
elaborated upon in the # nal Sustainability Plan.
These consultations were oriented to asking residents, What would a sustainable Churchill look like 5,
10, 20 years into the future? What measures, improvements and changes will help realize that vision?
What values should guide the journey towards sustainability?
